Naturalization is the legal process by which foreign nationals acquire U.S. citizenship after the individual meets the requirements described in the Immigration and Nationality Act.  The naturalization process is the last stage a foreign national must undergo in order to obtain their U.S. citizenship; at the same time, this process provides the immigration authorities the opportunity to review the foreign national’s immigration file to determine their eligibility to naturalize.
